We put Sony’s new FE 24-50mm f/2.8 G mirrorless lens to the test

Sony has released the latest addition to its already impressive mirrorless lens range with the all-new Sony FE 24-50mm F2.8 G.

With a fast aperture of 2.8 the new full-frame compatible lens achieves high-resolution performance with a light-weight design to make everyday shooting easier for photographers and videographers alike.

Sony Australia provided this publisher with devices for testing purposes. This did not affect our views of the device, and our review remains independent of the manufacturer.

Sharp images

If this lens is one thing, it is sharp. The images produced by the FE 24-50mm F2.8 G are very pleasing to the eye. And that sharpness remains relatively consistent throughout every stage of focal length.

Autofocus in the frame

The FE 24-50mm F2.8 G produces fast and accurate autofocus performance locking onto subjects with relative ease.

Even when burst shooting, the FE 24-50mm F2.8 G performs well and captures subjects’ eyes with precision. A large amount of foreground disturbance also proved to be no problem and the FE 24-50mm F2.8 G was able to lock onto a subject with relative ease.

During my testing, I also noticed little to no focus breathing, which is great for the videographers out there.

Robust design

The construction of the FE 24-50mm F2.8 G is very robust and being designed with smaller form factor makes it easy to use and carry for quick shoots and great for packing for longer remote shoots and trips.

Having full weather protection also adds to this lens’ adaptability, as it can be taken almost anywhere in harsher weather conditions and environments. When it comes to travel photography, this lens will be an ideal kit addition.

Final thoughts

Although not classified with the G Master range, the FE 24-50mm F2.8 G is an incredible lens that delivers great results in a compact and robust body design. I was also really impressed with the colour the lens produced straight out of the camera.

Not much post-editing needs to be done to make FE 24-50mm F2.8 G images really stand out. If you are looking for a high-quality landscape or allrounder shooting lens to add to your stills kit this one should definitely be on your radar.

Availability and pricing

Available in all major camera retailers from early April 2024. Pre-orders are also available through Sony’s online store.

The new FE 24-50mm F2.8 G will be available at an RRP of $1999 including GST in Australia and $1099 in the U.S.
