The newest Tamagotchi device, the Tamagotchi Uni, is more than just a new toy that lets you take care of a virtual pet; it can also connect to the Tamaverse, which Bandai Namco describes in a press release as “the super reverse of the Tamagotchi world.”
“Fans can now play along with Tamaverse’s Tama Arena, Tama Party, Tama Fashion and Tama Travel features, unleashing the fun on a global scale,” according to the Tamagotchi Uni statement. According to Tara Badie, senior director of brand strategy for Bandai Namco’s toys and collectibles division in the US, the device can connect to Wi-Fi, which means it’s likely to encounter meet with other Tamagotchis from around the world. But there isn’t any direct communication between players, like you can do in other metaverse-y environments like Meta’s horizon world or Epic Games’ fortress.
Perhaps the more tangible function of the Tamagotchi Uni is that you can use it as a watch thanks to the included wristband. Who needs the just-announced watchOS 10 for Apple Watch when you can wear Tamagotchi on your wrist?
The Tamagotchi Uni will be available for pre-order on Amazon starting Tuesday. It will be officially released on July 15.
