The Asus ROG Ally is a high-performance gaming laptop that combines power, style and versatility.

The handheld’s hardware ensures smooth gameplay, realistic graphics and fast loading times, providing an immersive gaming experience.

ASUS provided us with a loaner product for just over a week, however, had no input into our thinking or the overall editorial process.

How do I get it and how much will it cost?

The ROG Ally is available June 13 in Australia from JB Hi-Fi for $1,299.

What do we think?

The Asus ROG Ally is a powerful gaming handheld that delivers exceptional performance and features. From its sleek design to its impressive specs, this latest addition to the handheld console line is a real contender in the gaming market.

One of the standout features of the Asus ROG Ally is its powerful hardware. It is equipped with an AMD Ryzen Z1 processor and AMD Radeon graphics card, ensuring smooth gameplay and impressive visuals. Whether you’re playing demanding AAA titles or running resource-intensive apps, ROG Ally handles it all with ease.

The screen on the Asus ROG Ally is also excellent, if not in direct sunlight. It features a 7-inch Full HD panel with a high refresh rate of 120Hz, offering stunning visuals and fluid gameplay. Colors are vibrant and contrast is excellent, creating a brilliant gaming experience. However, if I used the handheld outside in direct sunlight – I sometimes struggled to see what was on the screen.

There are two speakers that come with Dolby Atmos and Hi-Res Audio, along with fantastic sound quality in games. Even watching YouTube brings an outstanding experience in terms of the sound quality that this device delivers.

When it comes to build quality, the Asus ROG Ally impresses with its solid construction. The chassis feels solid and well built, providing a premium and solid feel. The handheld also has a number of connectivity options, including USB-C, a Micro SD slot and the ROG XG mobile interface, allowing for easy connection to external devices and additional storage for an already decent 512GB.

One area where the Asus ROG Ally excels is its cooling system. It uses a robust cooling solution that keeps the internal components running at optimal temperatures even during long gaming sessions through the air vents on the back of the device. This ensures consistent performance and prevents any thermal throttling that could interfere with gameplay.

However, the battery life on the Asus ROG Ally is where I would like to see improvements. When playing intensive games like Microsoft Flight Simulator, I noticed a rapid battery drain. I’d be happy to have three hours without a charger.

The Asus ROG Ally is a really solid gaming handheld that ticks most of the right boxes. Its powerful hardware, stunning display and solid build quality make it a great choice for gamers and power users.

However, it also comes with a higher price, and insufficient battery life might make you pause before pulling the trigger on a purchase.
